Urmas Sisask’s piano compositions and planetary gongs’ cosmic sounds

We met as if by the Creator’s will. Both of us were fascinated by each other’s created music and soundscapes. It was a mutual recognition that Tiiu’s father Urmas’ celestial compositions would sound together with the cosmic sounds of planetary gongs. In our first rehearsals, perfect synergy arose, and it was clear that these two belong together – Urmas Sisask’s star music, channeled directly from the starry sky, and the cosmic symphony of gongs tuned to the planets. These two started resonating together, amplifying each other, and complementing one another beautifully.

“Sometimes you don’t need words to say something very important, to open something up. I vividly remember one evening, I was 14, the same age as my father when he composed his most played piece “Cassiopeia”. When he chose on a remarkable night in 1975, under the falling August stars, to compose music about the stars, then about 30 years later, under the same August stars, not outdoors, but in my father’s star observatory-planetarium, I also deepened my conviction that music is my path. It was the end of summer, just before I started music school. My father had just finished his last, third concert of the day, and naturally, he didn’t mind if I played a little more. Because when my father does something, it’s 100% passionate, whether it’s creativity, cooking, smoking, or playing piano for a janitor. That evening something special happened, my father poured his music into me with such force that it stayed there. It was one of the first times I seriously came into contact with his “Northern Sky” cycle.” – Tiiu speaks about how the August starfall night opened creative potential both for her father and herself (source: Ajakiri Muusika).

And so, the Starry Sky cycles of Urmas Sisask were born, inspired by astronomical observations and knowledge.

“The Creator may have a very hard time expressing what they meant or planned with what they did. But it’s enough to go outside on a dark night and look at the sky. When you see that infinite number of stars, you will understand what my father wants to say with his music – but you also won’t be able to put it into words.”

Our wish is to invite you on a cosmic journey with us. This musical mystery with piano and gongs is a specially created space where you can step out of the everyday hustle and enter a cosmic expansion. Through the music and mythical stories of ancient times, we get a glimpse of how significant the role of the starry sky has been for humankind since the dawn of time.

The piano compositions of Urmas Sisask are performed by pianist Tiiu Sisask, Urmas’ daughter. For Tiiu, playing her father’s pieces is as organic, natural, and essential as breathing: it makes her happy. “Playing his music is like meditation, I don’t have to force or search to understand. I’m just in the moment, and that feels good. It’s like sharing my inner world; I feel close to him and protected.”

The gong sounds are created by Tiina Karjatse, for whom working with gongs has opened a deep and cosmic journey in the sound landscape. Gong traveling helps us leave this dimension behind and effortlessly move into higher dimensions.
